Criteria for Certification

Many professional associations and educational institutes recognize OHA continuing education courses and the Diploma in Health Care Administration as being eligible for credit towards their certification or degree. Contact your professional association for details or clarification on their requirement for continuing education credits and certificate maintenance.

Ontario Nursing Home Association
The Professional Advisory Council of the Ontario Nursing Home Association awards 20 points for completion of the Environmental Services Level II course. The Clinical Leadership for Staff Nurses course is awarded 5 points towards the Director of Nursing Qualification criteria for specialization in long term care.

Ontario Health-Care Housekeepers’ Association (OHHA)

Each applicant must be a member in good standing with the Ontario Health-Care Housekeepers Association Inc. Each applicant must reach a credit level of 120 The credits assessed must be attained as per the following schedule:

Section A: Total of 100 credits
Section B: Total of 20 credits

Section A: 100 Credits
Successful completion of the Professional Health-Care Housekeepers’ Certificate Program (PHH).
PHH consists of the following two components:

O.H.H.A. Required Courses

  • Housekeeping Methodology: 10 credits
  • Infection Control: 10 credits
  • Laundry for Health-Care Facilities: 10 credits


O.H.A. credit courses
Required courses

  • Environmental Services Level 1(Supervisors): 20 credits
  • Environmental Services Level 11(Executive): 20 credits


Plus three additional

  • Managing Human Resources: 10 credits
  • Financial Management & Budgeting: 10 credits
  • Principles and Applications of Health Law: 10 credits
  • Adult Education: 10 credits


Exemptions:

  1. Preceptors of the above courses
  2. Authors of the above courses
  3. Exceptional courses reviewed by the OHHA Educational Committee that may be used in lieu of the above courses.


Section B Employment Requirements - 20 Credits
Health-Care Facility Employment

  1. Housekeeping/Environmental/Laundry/Maintenance/Dietary Department Head: 20 credits
  2. Housekeeping/Environmental/Laundry/Maintenance/Dietary Assistant Department Head, 3 + years: 14 credits
  3. Housekeeping/Environmental/Laundry/Maintenance/Dietary Supervisor, 5 + years: 12 credits
  4. 2 credits for each year as a Supervisor in a Health Care Setting


Non-Health-Care Facilities Employment

  1. Housekeeping/Environmental/Laundry/Maintenance/Dietary Department Head, 6 + years: 14 credits
  2. Housekeeping/Environmental/Laundry/Maintenance/Dietary Assistant Department Head, 3 + years: 10 credits


Section C: Conditions

  1. Each applicant must include photocopies of certificates and credit courses.
  2. Each applicant must include a signed letter to verify the employment requirements as per Section B.

Please note due to increased administrative costs there will now be an annual certification renewal charge of $25.00 and an initial certification charge of $100.00.
